The Hoffman Center
The Hoffman Center at Carpenter’s Shelter is a 64-bed temporary shelter that provides families with a safe, warm place to sleep, eat, and build up savings to move into their own apartment. The shelter provides a community room, computer lab. classroom, private outdoor courtyard, laundry facilities, indoor and outdoor play areas for children and teens, and living quarters where families can stay together. The Hoffman Center is open 24/7, seven days a week.
David’s Place
David’s Place meets the basic needs of adults experiencing unsheltered homelessness.
Guests come to David’s Place to take a hot shower, do some laundry, lock up their valuables for the day and enjoy a snack. Guests can have their mail forwarded to our address, as well as use phone and voice mail services.
Staff also connect guests with referrals to local food banks, clothing donations, and other services, including our Rapid Re-Housing program.

Alexandria Community Shelter
Winter Shelter
The City of Alexandria Winter Shelter, also called Hypothermia Shelter, ensures that individuals and families experiencing homelessness have a warm, clean and safe environment to retreat from the elements of weather at night.
The Winter Shelter, operated by Carpenter’s Shelter, is open nightly from 7 pm to 7 am regardless of weather from November 1st through April 15th.
The Winter Shelter provides supportive services and resources necessary to assist residents in obtaining stable housing.
In fiscal year 2024, Carpenter’s Shelter served 401 clients in the Winter Shelter: including 357 adults and 43 children.
Hours: 7:00 pm to 7:00 am daily from November 1st through April 15th
Location: Alexandria Community Shelter, 2355-B Mill Road, Alexandria, VA, 22314
Public Transportation: Dash Bus 30 from Braddock Road and Bus 32 from King Street. Metro drop off at Eisenhower Avenue station. From the station, it is a short walk to the Winter Shelter.
