Carpenter’s Shelter’s signature tasting event will be held at a fabulous new Pop-Up location in Old Town Alexandria on Sunday, August 28th, 12:00-3:00pm. Carpenter’s Cook-Off Pop-Up includes sampling (and judging!) delicacies from top-rated local restaurants and caterers, live music from the Jones Point Band, a Children’s Corner, award presentation, live and silent auctions, and raffles. Join us for this fun-filled, family-friendly event that supports children, women, and men experiencing homelessness in Alexandria. Our new location is 201 N. Union Street, Alexandria, VA (top floor), right next to the Torpedo Factory. Get your tickets today! Advance tickets are $50/adults, $20/child. At the door, tickets are $75/adult, $25/child.

Meet our 2022 Celebrity Judges!

 

Chef Daniel Burroughs is a former sous chef for the Washington Redskins Organization and Culinary Supervisor for the Presidents Club at the Washington Nationals Baseball Stadium. He is a personal chef out of Northern Virginia and currently runs his own catering and healthy meal prep business, Finishing Touches. Chef Burroughs has cooked for numerous musicians, athletes, comedians, actors, and celebrities and is working to open a ghost kitchen in DC in the next few months. Stay Tuned!

 

Samantha (Sam) Kasten is the founder & CEO of Umbrella Dry Drinks, a concept to provide sophisticated nonalcoholic options for those who wish to stay dry. Umbrella Dry Drinks was founded in December 2021 and is currently operating as a pop-up bar & bottle shop in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Sam lives in Old Town with her fiancé, Trevor, & their rescue dog, Carmel.

 

Winner of the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef Mid-Atlantic 1999”, Jeffrey Buben is the chef and owner of two restaurants in Washington, D.C., Bistro Bis and Woodward Table. Buben was the owner for the iconic Vidalia Restaurant which finally closed its doors after twenty-three years in December 2016. As a 1978 graduate of The Culinary Institute of America and 40 plus years in the industry, he worked as a young chef in such notable restaurants as The Sign of the Dove, Le Cygne and Le Chantilly in New York and at several distinguished hotels including The Four Seasons, The Mayflower and The Hotel Pierre.

After relocating to Washington, D.C. area in 1984, Buben opened Vidalia in 1993 and was acknowledged by Bon Appetit as one of the “Best New Restaurants.” The fall of 1998 heralded the arrival of Buben’s second restaurant, Bistro Bis, located at the Hotel George on Capitol Hill. Bis features creative contemporary French bistro cooking with updated renditions of classic fare. With its numerous awards, Bis continues to be the place “Where Statesmen Dine.” Bis has been featured on the Travel Channel as a top restaurant destination in Washington, D.C. Jeffrey enjoys promoting and teaching his profession to young cooks. He is active in many local charities.
